The Medicaid Managed Care Organization delivers customized care to the state

TACOMA, Wash. (July 19, 2022) – Coordinated Care announced today they are celebrating the milestone of 10 years of delivering quality healthcare, benefits, and tailored programs to Washingtonians, alongside dedicated providers, and community-based organizations throughout Washington.

"Coordinated Care's purpose is to transform the health of the community, one person at a time," said Beth Johnson, President and CEO of Coordinated Care. "With our purpose behind everything we do, we proactively evaluate the needs of Washingtonians and generate innovative solutions designed to care for the whole person, improve the lives of our members, and increase access to crucial resources."

When Coordinated Care launched in 2012, it began with a multifaceted approach to pre- and post-natal care, helping pregnant Medicaid members deliver healthier babies. This was made possible through the "Start Smart for Your Baby" program. Coordinated Care led the market by also offering a related program designed to identify pregnant members earlier in pregnancy and reduce the rate of prematurity, shorten neonatal hospital stays, and increase birth weights. These programs consistently show positive results for Coordinated Care members. The health plan continues to provide car seats, breast pumps, and other support for pregnant and postpartum members with this program, at no cost.

Coordinated Care continues to develop programs to serve the healthcare needs of Washingtonians. In 2016, Coordinated Care was selected by the Washington State Health Care Authority to manage healthcare services for children and youth in foster care and related programs. The custom support offered in this program recently expanded to include other vulnerable youth with the addition of unaccompanied refugee minors. In recognition of the program’s ability to partner with the child welfare system to provide access to quality medical care, in 2018, Coordinated Care received the Practice Transformation Award from the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS).

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit hard in 2020, Coordinated Care acted quickly to provide Washington with basic needs such as food, housing, and other essential supplies. The health plan donated 10,000 face masks and hand sanitizer to more than 40 clinics and community partners across the state during the global shortage, provided more than $150,000 in COVID relief funds to community-based organizations, distributed $30,000 worth of gift cards for essentials like groceries and hygiene products. This effort includes providing over one million meals via a campaign that has become a major priority for Coordinated Care and their employees to increase access to nutritious food throughout the state. They also designed a member benefit, Coordinated Care Harvest Bucks, to increase access to fruits and vegetables—the only managed care organization to offer a nutrition-based benefit for members.

Coordinated Care's commitment to address social determinants of health is demonstrated through their long-standing commitment of supporting whole-person care. In 2021, Coordinated Care launched their Community Giving Program, investing more than $2 million with over 80 expert partners statewide for programs impacting workforce shortages, social determinants of health, and healthcare disparities among BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, incarcerated, and other underrepresented communities.

Most recently, to help alleviate ongoing shortages of baby formula, Coordinated Care is delivering infant and toddler formula to Washington's healthcare providers in underserved areas around the state. More than 100 cannisters of formula have been distributed to pediatric clinics, crisis nurseries, and Coordinated Care's Foster Care Centers of Excellence, providing approximately 2,000 meals to feed children of parents and families struggling to access this vital resource.

Coordinated Care is the sole source of Apple Health Foster Care for the state, in addition to serving members with Apple Health (Medicaid), Ambetter from Coordinated Care on the Washington Health Benefit Exchange, and most recently Medicare with Wellcare.
