Emergency Food Network to Recognize Coordinated Care with Silver Spoon Award
Award recognizes Coordinated Care’s contribution to addressing food insecurity throughout Pierce County.

March 13, 2020 (WASHINGTON) – On Thursday, March 12, local health plan Coordinated Care received the Silver Spoon Award from Emergency Food Network (EFN), a nonprofit that addresses food insecurity among individuals and families in need throughout Pierce County. The award recognizes Coordinated Care’s commitment to supporting EFN’s mission through employee volunteerism and ongoing engagement with the nonprofit.

Starting in 2013, Coordinated Care began volunteering with EFN and, in 2017, they became an official partner in their initiatives to improve food accessibility. One of those initiatives is EFN’s “Break Bags” program, where Coordinated Care has sponsored and helped pack free food supplies for students who rely on school-provided meals. The “Break Bags” are given out before holiday breaks, so students and their families still have access to nutritious food when school is not in session. Throughout their seven years of engagement, Coordinated Care has also partnered with EFN to host food drives, participate in the Hunger Walk & 5K, volunteer at food pantries, and raise money to support their initiatives.

“Research shows that access to quality, nutritious food contributes to overall health and wellness,” said Beth Johnson, president and CEO, Coordinated Care. “Our partnership with Emergency Food Network allows us to consolidate resources to make a more meaningful impact on food insecurity and hunger issues in our community. We’re honored to be recognized with this award, and we look forward to continuing our work with them.”

More than 100 Coordinated Care employees join other community organizations and members in volunteering at EFN each year. Coordinated Care recognizes that access to quality and nutritious food is a foundational part of health. As a result, the company organizes programs and partnerships that support food accessibility and encourages employees to get involved as well.

“We are incredibly grateful for our partnership with Coordinated Care,” said Michelle Douglas, CEO at Emergency Food Network. “They continue to show their support year after year with a strong commitment to helping us provide healthy, nutritious food for our neighbors in need.”

As part of its partnership, Coordinated Care will help EFN pack “Break Bags” on Saturday, March 21, from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. The bags will then be distributed to students ahead of spring break.
