Emergency Contraception

Emergency Contraception is a safe way to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex. There are a few types of emergency contraception. Contraception means “to prevent pregnancy.” It is a form of birth control.

What kinds of Emergency Contraception are there?

There are 2 ways to prevent pregnancy after you have had unprotected sex:

  • Option 1: Get an IUD (“intrauterine device”) within 120 hours (5 days) 
  • Option 2: Take an emergency contraceptive pill (“the morning-after pill”) within 120 hours (5 days) after having unprotected sex

There are a few ways to get this pill. One brand needs a prescription from a nurse or doctor. Others can be bought over the counter.

Over-the-counter contraceptives are covered products that may be dispensed without a prescription. Covered products include:

  • Condoms (including female)
  • Spermicides
  • Sponges
  • Emergency contraceptive drug (plan B) that is dispensed over-the-counter
